Community Development Fellows, including Peace Corps Fellows, are Policy Center students who work in community agencies, paid by the Policy Center from grants received from the participating agencies.
Damon Bethea's ethic of community service led him to work for Aspen Institute's Economic Opportunities Program in Washington, D.C., after he received his bachelor's degree. When he came to study in the Policy Center he actively sought the opportunity to continue working in the community. As a Community Development Fellow at Goodwill Industries of Pittsburgh he worked on a project to prepare inmates of the county jail for their release by assisting them with job placement. His fellowship led to career opportunities in the workforce development field, including his current position as a consultant with World-Class Industrial Network in Pittsburgh.
John Barrett loved his VISTA service in Philadelphia. When he came to study in the Policy Center he wanted to continue serving in the community. His Community Development Fellowship at the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership led to full-time employment there when he graduated, then to the Local Government Academy and to become chief administrator of the Municipality of Murrysville.
Fellows from the Policy Center have worked in over 35 different community agencies in the Pittsburgh region, which have made grants of over $350,000 to the Policy Center, all of which have been paid as stipends to the Fellows for their work. Since 1997 Fellows have worked in the following agencies:
Allegheny County Economic Development Allegheny Institute for Public Policy Brother's Brother Foundation Commission for Workforce Excellence Community College of Allegheny County Community Human Services Corporation Community Outreach Partnership Center Community Technical Assistance Center Computers for Friends Conflict Resolution Center International Conservation Consultants Environmental City Network Girl Scouts Trillium Council Global Links Global Solutions Goodwill Industries of Pittsburgh Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank Green Building Alliance Heinz Endowments Hill House Association Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh Jewish Healthcare Foundation Junior Achievement of Western Pennsylvania Just Harvest Manchester Citizens Corporation Mount Washington Community Development Corporation North Side Civic Development Council Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership Pittsburgh Partnership Pittsburgh Regional Alliance Pittsburgh Technology Council Quaker Valley Sschool District Southwestern Pennsylvania Corporation Uptown Community Action Group Vietnam Veterans Leadership Program Western Pennsylvania Brownfields Center World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh.
Peace Corps Fellows were the Policy Center's first Community Development Fellows, pursuant to an agreement between Duquesne University and the United States Peace Corps first signed in 1998. Other students, seeing what the Peace Corps Fellows were doing, wanted the same experience of working in and contributing to the community during the time they were in school, while being paid for their service.
Dr. Evan Stoddard, Duquesne University's Peace Corps Fellows Coordinator and the Policy Center's Associate Director for Community Outreach, assists Fellows to find work in a community agency that makes good use of the Fellow's talents, skills and experience and moves the Fellow in the direction of his or her professional interests.
For more information on Fellowships in the Policy Center, contact Dr. Stoddard by e-mail or by telephone at 412-396-5179.
